Summer Hair Colour Care – Protect Your Colour in the Sun

Summer Hair Colour Care – How to Protect Your Colour

Summer is wonderful, but it can be tough on colour-treated hair. UV rays, salt water, chlorine and increased heat styling can all cause colour to fade faster and hair to become drier and more brittle. At Fergal Doyle Hair in Bristol, we want to help you keep your colour looking beautiful all summer long. Here are our expert tips.

Use UV Protection Products

Just as you protect your skin from the sun, you need to protect your hair. UV rays are one of the primary causes of colour fade in summer. Use a leave-in spray or serum with UV filters before going outside, especially if you have blonde, lightened or colour-treated hair. This one step alone can dramatically extend the vibrancy of your colour during summer months.

Protect Hair in the Pool and Sea

Chlorine and salt water both strip colour and can cause significant damage to chemically treated hair. Before swimming, wet your hair with fresh water and apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil – this reduces the amount of chlorinated or salt water your hair absorbs. Always rinse your hair thoroughly with clean water immediately after swimming.

Adjust Your Washing Routine

In summer, many people wash their hair more frequently due to heat and humidity. However, frequent washing strips colour more quickly. Try to wash hair no more than every 2-3 days, use a sulphate-free colour-protecting shampoo, and always condition thoroughly. Dry shampoo can help extend time between washes.
