How Often Should You Colour Your Hair? Expert Advice from Bristol

How Often Should You Colour Your Hair?

One of the most common questions our clients at Fergal Doyle Hair ask is: how often should I colour my hair? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on your colour service, your natural hair growth rate, and how much contrast you find acceptable between appointments. Here is our expert guide to colour appointment frequency.

Balayage: Every 12-16 Weeks

Balayage is the most low-maintenance colour service. Because it blends naturally with your base colour and does not create a defined root line, most balayage clients can go 12-16 weeks between appointments. Some clients with subtle, natural balayage visit us every 20 weeks or longer. This is one of the reasons balayage is so popular for busy clients.

Highlights: Every 6-10 Weeks

Traditional foil highlights typically need refreshing every 6-10 weeks. Because highlights create clearly defined light pieces that contrast with the natural root, the grow-out becomes more visible more quickly than balayage. How often you need a top-up depends on how dark your natural root is and how bright your highlights are.

Root Colour: Every 4-6 Weeks

All-over colour and root touch-ups typically need refreshing every 4-6 weeks. If you are covering grey hair, you may prefer to visit every 4 weeks to keep roots looking fresh. Some clients with slower-growing hair or a more relaxed attitude to roots are comfortable with 6-8 weeks between appointments.

The Importance of Not Over-Colouring

Over-colouring hair – especially repeatedly bleaching or applying permanent colour to already-processed hair – can lead to damage, dryness and breakage. At Fergal Doyle Hair, we always assess the condition of your hair at every appointment and will advise if we think it needs a break or a treatment rather than another colour service.
