What Causes Brassy Hair – And How to Fix It
Brassy, orange or yellow tones in lightened hair are one of the most common hair colour concerns we hear about at Fergal Doyle Hair in Bristol. Brassiness can creep in after bleaching, highlighting or balayage – and understanding why it happens is the first step to fixing and preventing it.
Why Does Hair Go Brassy?
Hair contains natural underlying pigments – predominantly red, orange and yellow tones. When hair is lightened with bleach, these underlying pigments are revealed as the natural darker colour is lifted. If the hair is not lightened enough or toned correctly after lightening, these warm underlying tones remain visible, causing the brassy appearance that clients find undesirable.
Other Causes of Brassiness
Brassiness can also develop or worsen over time due to hard water mineral deposits, UV exposure fading the toner applied after bleaching, using the wrong shampoo and conditioner, heat styling without protection, and chlorine or salt water exposure. The toner applied at your colour appointment gradually fades between visits, which is why brassiness often becomes more noticeable 6-8 weeks after your appointment.
How to Fix Brassy Hair at Home
The most effective at-home fix for brassiness is a good purple or blue toning shampoo or conditioner. Purple pigments neutralise yellow tones, while blue pigments target orange tones. Use once or twice a week, leaving on for 3-10 minutes depending on the intensity of brassiness. This is a temporary fix – for a lasting solution, book a toning gloss or colour refresh at Fergal Doyle Hair.
