For many women who wear a hijab or niqab, booking a hair appointment comes with a question most salons never stop to consider: where can I uncover my hair in private, away from the eyes of men? It is a completely reasonable thing to need, and yet it rules out an awful lot of open-plan, mixed salons.
At Fergal Doyle Hair, we have a private space downstairs that can be used exclusively by women. That means you can arrive, relax, uncover, and enjoy expert colour and cutting with genuine peace of mind, no men walking past, no windows onto the street, no compromise. We are award-winning colour specialists based in Bristol, and we would love to welcome you.
A private space, used exclusively by women
Our downstairs space can be set aside as a women-only area, screened from the main salon, so you have real privacy for the whole appointment. This is not a curtain pulled halfway across a busy room. It is a proper, separate space where you can remove your headscarf, let your hair down, and be looked after by our team without worrying about who might see.
When you book, simply let us know you would like to use our private women-only space, and we will arrange the right time and studio so everything is ready for you. If you would prefer a female stylist throughout, just say, we will make sure that is exactly what you get.
Why this matters, and why we take it seriously
For a woman who observes hijab or niqab, hair is private. It is often something enjoyed for herself, her family, and other women, rather than for public display. A standard salon simply is not built with that in mind, and being asked to uncover in a room where men can see is, understandably, a non-starter.
We think everyone deserves to feel completely comfortable in the chair. Getting your hair done should be a treat, not a source of anxiety. By offering a genuinely private, women-only space, we remove that barrier entirely, so the only thing you need to think about is the colour or cut you have been dreaming of.

Colour, just for you
Here is the part we get most excited about: we are colour specialists. Our founder is a Wella Colour Ambassador, and our team includes award-winning colourists who live and breathe balayage, blonde, grey blending, rich brunettes and colour correction.
There is a lovely myth we would like to put to rest, that if your hair is usually covered, colour is not worth it. We hear the opposite from our clients every day. Beautiful colour is for you. It is the glimpse in the mirror each morning, the way it looks when you are at home or among the women in your life, the confidence of knowing your hair looks incredible under the scarf. If anything, our covered clients often have some of the healthiest, best-kept hair we see, precisely because it is protected from the sun and daily styling.
Whatever you are after, a warm dimensional brunette, a soft balayage, a bold colour change, or simply keeping your natural colour glossy and healthy, you will be in expert hands.
Caring for coloured hair under a headscarf
Because we look after a lot of clients who cover their hair, we have picked up genuinely useful know-how that most salons never think about. A few things that make a real difference:
• Let hair dry fully before covering. Wrapping damp hair for hours can weaken it and encourage breakage, so build a little drying time into your routine.
• Choose breathable under-scarf fabrics. Cotton or bamboo caps let the scalp breathe and reduce the sweat and friction that can dull colour and dry the hair out.
• Mind the friction points. The same spots that rub against a scarf edge or tie can, over time, cause thinning or breakage. We can cut and place colour with this in mind, and show you how to vary where you tie.
• Keep moisture up. Covered hair can get dry, so a weekly mask and the right colour-safe products keep both your hair and your colour looking rich.
• Refresh tone with a gloss. A quick gloss every few weeks revives shine and stops blonde or lightened tones going brassy, a small, low-cost way to keep colour looking freshly done.
This is exactly the kind of tailored advice we build into every appointment, so you leave knowing how to keep your colour looking its best between visits.
What to expect at your first visit
Everything starts with a relaxed consultation. We will talk through what you want, look at your hair's condition and history, and be honest about what is achievable and how to keep it healthy. If any colour is involved and it is your first time with us, you will need a quick skin sensitivity test at least 48 hours beforehand, so it is worth booking that in early.
New clients can get to know us with our New Cut Experience for 60 pounds, a wash, cut, blow dry, gloss treatment and full consultation, a lovely, low-pressure way to experience the salon and our private space before a bigger colour transformation.
Everyone is welcome here
We are proud to be a salon where women of every background feel genuinely at home. Offering a private, women-only space for our hijab and niqab-wearing clients is simply part of that, thoughtful, discreet, and done properly. You will be met with warmth, professionalism and zero fuss.
