Grey roots: coverage, blending or growing it out?

Noticing more grey roots does not mean you have to book the same colour forever. You might want full coverage, a softer contrast or a plan to grow your colour out. Each is a valid choice. The useful starting point is what you want to see in the mirror, how often you want a salon appointment and what you are comfortable spending.

Choose coverage when a uniform shade matters to you

If you prefer your grey concealed, talk to your colourist about a root service and how the new growth will meet the existing lengths. Bring your colour history, including home colour. Ask what the finish will look like as roots grow back. A shade you love on day one should also make sense for the return visits you are willing to make.

Choose blending when you want less contrast

Blending aims to soften the difference between silver hairs and the surrounding colour. It may leave grey visible. The technique might involve lightness, depth or tonal refinement, depending on the starting point. It is not a standard highlights recipe and it is not automatically a cheaper or quicker service. A consultation helps establish what work your hair actually needs.

Choose growing out when you want your natural grey

Keeping your own silver can mean giving the coloured lengths time to grow and gradually cutting them away. Some people choose a shorter shape; others keep their length and accept a transition period. Ask how to make that period feel intentional. Our short-hair inspiration includes crops and bobs, but you do not have to go short to wear grey.

Be realistic about dark colour and silver inspiration

A photograph cannot show every stage behind a result. Previously dyed dark hair may need a longer journey, and lightening may not be suitable for the condition of your lengths. Bring an honest record of previous colour and treatments. Your stylist can discuss a staged plan or a different result rather than promise a transformation in one visit.

Ask these questions before committing

What result is achievable from my starting point? What is the complete price including toner, treatments and finishing? How often might I want a refresh? What will the transition look like between visits? Which homecare steps matter for my particular hair? Colour guide prices at FDH exclude toner, treatments and finishing, so discuss the whole appointment.

Book a conversation before the colour

Our Bristol salons are in Clifton on Whiteladies Road and Stoke Bishop on Druid Hill. A colour consultation and skin-test appointment is 15 minutes and does not include colour application. Existing skin-test requirements apply. Explore grey coverage and blending at FDH and book your consultation to agree the next step.
