Deciding to go blonde for the first time is genuinely exciting, and a little nerve wracking. The good news is that with the right plan, it is a brilliant, hair healthy journey. Here is exactly how it goes, step by step, so there are no surprises.
Step 1: the consultation (and the patch test)
Everything starts here. We will look at your natural base, the condition and history of your hair, and the blonde you have in mind, bring photos, they help enormously. We will be honest about whether your goal is a one visit job or a staged journey. If any colour or toner is involved, you will also need a quick skin sensitivity test at least 48 hours beforehand, so we will sort that early.
Step 2: choosing your blonde
Blonde is a hundred different things. Do you want a low maintenance balayage that keeps a soft natural root, or a brighter all over look? Cool and icy, or warm and honeyed? For a first timer, I usually steer towards something with a lived in root, it is softer on your hair, kinder to your diary, and grows out gracefully.
Step 3: the appointment itself
Lightening takes time, set aside a good few hours and bring something to do. We lighten, we rinse, and then comes the part that makes all the difference, toning. This is where raw lightened hair becomes your shade. We will also use a bond building treatment throughout to keep your hair strong.
Step 4: the honest bit about going dark to light
If you are starting from dark or previously coloured hair, your hair may not reach your dream blonde in a single sitting, and that is not a setback, it is us protecting your hair. Rushing dark hair to platinum in one go is how breakage happens. A staged approach gets you there healthy.
Step 5: aftercare, protecting your new colour
• Purple shampoo once or twice a week keeps brassiness and yellow tones at bay.
• A weekly mask replaces moisture that lightening removes.
• Turn the heat down on your styling tools and always use heat protection.
• Book your toner top up. Gloss fades first, and a refresh keeps you looking salon fresh between full colours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go from brunette to blonde in one appointment?
Sometimes, but often it is safest over two or more sessions, especially on dark or box dyed hair. Your stylist will give you an honest timeline at the consultation.
Will going blonde damage my hair?
Lightening is a chemical process, but with bond building treatments, a skilled colourist and good aftercare, blonde hair can stay healthy and glossy.
How often will I need to maintain it?
A lived in balayage can stretch to three to four months. Brighter all over blonde needs root work every 6 to 8 weeks. Toner refreshes sit somewhere in between.
