A little preparation makes a huge difference to your first colour appointment, and it is genuinely the part that separates a good result from a great one. None of it is complicated. Here is exactly how to set yourself up for colour you will love.
Book your skin sensitivity test early
If it is your first colour with us, or your first in a while, you will need a quick skin sensitivity test at least 48 hours before your appointment. It takes moments, but it has to be done in advance, so book it in early rather than discovering it on the day.
Bring photos, and be realistic
Photos are the best way to show your stylist what you mean, words like ash, warm or natural mean different things to different people. Bring a few images of what you love, and if you can, what you do not, it all helps. We will be honest about what is achievable on your hair in one visit.

Be honest about your hair history
This is the big one. Tell us everything that has been on your hair, box dye, henna, previous lightening, even from a year ago. It is not about judgement, it genuinely changes how your hair will react to colour and lets us keep it healthy and get the shade right.
Know the time it takes
Colour, especially lightening, takes time. For a first appointment with a consultation, lightening and toning, set aside a good chunk of your day and bring something to do. Rushing colour is never a good idea.
Set up your aftercare
Ask your stylist what to use at home before you leave, the right shampoo, a toning product if you are blonde, and a mask. Protecting your colour from day one is how you keep it looking salon-fresh.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a patch test before colouring my hair?
Yes, a skin sensitivity test is required at least 48 hours before your first colour service, so book it in advance of your appointment.
Should I wash my hair before a colour appointment?
Day-old hair is usually fine and often ideal, your stylist will advise, but you do not need squeaky-clean hair. Avoid heavy product on the day.
How long will my first colour appointment take?
It varies with the service, but a first colour with consultation, lightening and toning can take several hours, so allow plenty of time.
