Balayage vs Highlights: What's the Difference?
One of the most common questions we get asked at Fergal Doyle Hair is: what's the difference between balayage and highlights? Both are hair lightening techniques, but they work in different ways and deliver very different results. Understanding the distinction can help you choose the right service for your hair goals.
What Are Traditional Highlights?
Traditional highlights involve weaving or slicing sections of hair, wrapping them in foil and applying lightener or colour. Foil highlights typically produce a more uniform, structured look with defined streaks of colour. They can be done as a full head, half head or T-section and are excellent for adding brightness and dimension to darker hair.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a freehand painting technique where colour is swept directly onto the surface of the hair. Because it is applied without foil in most cases, balayage creates softer, more natural-looking results with a seamless blend. The colour is typically concentrated at the mid-lengths and ends, creating a sun-kissed, lived-in effect.
Balayage vs Highlights: Maintenance
One of the biggest advantages of balayage over traditional highlights is the lower maintenance requirement. Because balayage doesn't have a defined root line, it grows out more naturally and gracefully. Most balayage clients can go 12-16 weeks between appointments. Foil highlights, on the other hand, typically need refreshing every 6-10 weeks.
Which Is Better: Balayage or Highlights?
Neither is inherently better – it depends on your goals. If you want a natural, low-maintenance colour that blends seamlessly, balayage is usually the best choice. If you want maximum brightness and contrast or a more structured, uniform look, foil highlights may be more appropriate. Many of our clients actually combine both techniques for the most dimensional results.
