How to Fix Brassy Hair at Home | Toning Tips from Fergal Doyle Hair Bristol

Brassy hair is one of the most common frustrations for blonde and lightened hair clients. That unwanted yellow, orange or gold tone that appears weeks after your salon appointment is completely normal — but it's also very fixable. Here are our expert tips for toning brassy hair at home, from the colour specialists at Fergal Doyle Hair in Bristol.

Why Does Hair Go Brassy?

All hair contains underlying warm pigments — red, orange and yellow — that are exposed when the hair is lightened. When bleach or lightener is applied, it lifts the natural colour but the warm underlying tones remain. Over time, as toner fades, these warm tones become visible again. Hard water, heat styling, sun exposure and certain shampoos all accelerate the fading of toner and the return of brassiness.

Purple Shampoo: Your First Line of Defence

Purple and violet pigments sit opposite yellow on the colour wheel, which means they neutralise yellow and brassy tones. Use a purple shampoo once or twice a week in place of your regular shampoo. Leave it on for two to five minutes before rinsing. Don't overuse it — more than twice a week can leave a lilac tint, especially on very light blonde hair.

Blue Shampoo for Orange Tones

If your hair is more orange than yellow — common in brunettes who have been lightened or in hair that hasn't been lifted light enough — blue shampoo is more effective than purple. Blue sits opposite orange on the colour wheel. Use it the same way as purple shampoo: once or twice a week, left on for a few minutes before rinsing.

When Home Toning Isn't Enough

Purple shampoo can only do so much. If your hair is significantly brassy, a professional toning gloss at the salon is the most effective solution. A gloss deposits tone, adds shine and takes just 20 to 30 minutes. At Fergal Doyle Hair we offer standalone toning appointments that are specifically designed to refresh your colour between full colour services.
