Copper, Cowboy Copper & the Warm Reds Taking Over 2026

Updated: 12 hours ago

By Brandon, Artistic Director, Clifton

If 2025 was the year everyone went quietly expensive with brunette, 2026 is the year colour gets brave again, and nothing says it louder than copper. But this is not the flat, fire engine red of years past. The new reds are nuanced, grounded and genuinely wearable, and I am thrilled to see them back.

The shades leading the charge

Cowboy copper

A warm, slightly dusty copper with an editorial, lived in feel, bright but grounded, never garish. It is the shade flooding social media right now, and for good reason, it flatters far more skin tones than people expect.

Sienna and rust

For those who want warmth without full volume copper, sienna and rust are softer, earthier reds that read as sophisticated rather than statement. Beautiful paired with a soft balayage for a lived in glow.

Copper balayage and glossed reds

You do not have to commit head to toe. A copper gloss over your existing base, or copper balayage through the lengths, is a lower commitment way to test the warmth before going all in.

The one honest catch: reds fade

Copper and red molecules are the largest pigments we work with, which means they are the first to wash out. That is not a reason to avoid them, it is a reason to look after them properly. Here is how we keep copper vivid.

• Wash less, and cooler. Hot water opens the cuticle and lets pigment escape.

• Use a colour depositing shampoo or mask in a warm copper tone to top up pigment at home.

• Book a gloss refresh every few weeks to keep the shade saturated and shiny.

• Protect from sun and chlorine, both of which fade warm tones fast.

Who copper suits

Almost everyone, with the right tone, that is the colourist job. Cooler skin tones tend to glow with a softer, raspberry leaning copper. Warmer skin tones can carry golden and rust shades beautifully. This is exactly the kind of decision worth making in a consultation rather than from a screenshot.

Frequently asked questions

What is cowboy copper hair?

Cowboy copper is a warm, slightly dusty, lived in copper shade, bright but grounded, that is one of 2026 standout colour trends.

Why does copper hair fade so quickly?

Copper and red pigments are the largest colour molecules, so they wash out faster than other shades. Cooler, less frequent washing, colour depositing products and gloss refreshes all extend the life.

Can I go copper without dyeing all my hair?

Absolutely, a copper gloss or copper balayage gives you the warmth with far less commitment, and it is a great way to trial the trend.
