Curly and coily hair is more fragile than straight hair by its very nature, every bend in the curl is a potential weak point, which means colouring it well is as much about protecting your curl pattern as it is about the shade. The good news, with the right approach, coloured curls can be vivid, dimensional and beautifully healthy.
Why curly hair needs a different approach
Curls are naturally drier, because the oils from your scalp struggle to travel down a spiral. Add lightening to already thirsty hair and you can lose definition fast. So with curls, we lead with hair health, bond building treatments throughout, gentler lifting, and colour placed rather than saturated all over.
The techniques that work best on curls
• Balayage and chunkier hand painting. Because curls coil, ultra fine highlights can disappear. Slightly bolder, well placed pieces pop as the curl moves and give dimension without bleaching everything.
• Face framing brightness. A few lighter pieces around the face lift the whole look with minimal lightening.
• Glossing. Adds shine and tone, curls can look dull when dry, with no extra damage.
• Lived in placement. Keeps a healthy root and grows out softly, so you are not back under bleach constantly.

The cut matters as much as the colour
Curls are best cut to work with their natural shape and shrinkage. A cut that suits your curl pattern means your colour placement lands exactly where it flatters, which is why, for curly clients, we always think about cut and colour together rather than as separate decisions.
Aftercare for coloured curls
• Moisture, moisture, moisture. A rich weekly mask is non negotiable for coloured curls.
• Sulphate free, curl friendly washing protects both colour and curl definition.
• Cool water and microfibre or cotton drying reduce frizz and colour loss.
• Less heat. Embrace your natural pattern where you can, coloured curls are happiest left to do their thing.
Frequently asked questions
Can you balayage curly hair?
Yes, and it is often the best choice for curls. Slightly bolder, well placed hand painting gives dimension that shows as the curl moves, with less overall lightening than full highlights.
Does colouring damage curl pattern?
It can if it is done aggressively, but with bond building treatments, placed lightening and good aftercare, your curl pattern stays healthy and defined.
Should I get my curly hair cut and coloured at the same time?
Ideally they are planned together, since the cut shapes where colour will flatter most. Talk to a stylist who specialises in curls.
